Munising Front Range Light
The Munising Front Range Light was constructed in 1908 and has been guiding mariners into the harbor of Munising since its completion.
History
- The lighthouse replaced the ineffective Grand Island East Channel Light in 1905, along with its matching Munising Rear Range Light. These two lights work together to guide boats from Lake Superior down the East Channel next to Grand Island.
- The Munising Front Range Light is a tall, imposing structure that stands at a tower height of approximately 80 feet (24 meters). The focal height, which is the distance from the base of the lens to the top of the light, is around 105 feet (32 meters) above sea level.
Architecture
The Munising Front Range Light was designed by an unknown architect and constructed using traditional materials such as stone and brick.
Light Characteristics
The Munising Front Range Light operates on a range light system, which consists of two lights that indicate a specific line of position when they are in line. The higher rear light is placed behind the front light, with the front light appearing to be left or right of the rear light depending on the mariner's position relative to the range line.
Current Status
The Munising Front Range Light is currently managed by the National Park Service and is open to visitors. However, the tower itself is closed to the public due to safety concerns.
Location and Accessibility
The Munising Front Range Light is located at the western edge of Munising, north of M-28. Visitors can access the grounds surrounding the lighthouse, but must be guided by a park ranger or other authorized personnel when approaching the tower.
Heritage Status
The Munising Front Range Light has been recognized for its historical significance and is listed as a notable landmark in the area.
Notable Historical Events
- The Munising Front Range Light played an important role in guiding mariners into the harbor of Munising during World War II, when the area was an active military installation. The lighthouse also underwent significant restoration work in the 1980s to ensure its continued operation and safety.
