Penfield Reef Light

The Penfield Reef Light was constructed in 1874 and is one of the last offshore masonry lights built at that time.

History

  • The lighthouse consists of a 1-1/2 story keeper's quarters with a mansard roof, integrated into the wood frame tower.
  • The dwelling is built of granite ashlar with brick backing and heavy timber framing.
  • Iron flat plates are anchored to the granite at spaced intervals to reinforce the walls.

The foundation system is a cylindrical granite block caisson with a concrete core.

Architecture

  • The Penfield Reef Light emits a red light with a range of 15 nautical miles (27 km).
  • It operates on a six-second cycle, flashing every 0.6 seconds and then again after a five-second interval.

Current Status

The lighthouse is currently an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated for some time.

The Penfield Reef Light is located on Penfield Reef at the south side of Black Rock Harbor entrance on the Long Island Sound, off the coast of Fairfield, Connecticut.

The structure is approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) off Fairfield Beach.

Heritage Status

The lighthouse has been designated as a National Historic Landmark by the NRHP, recognizing its significance in American maritime history.
