Plum Island Light

The Plum Island Light was originally constructed in 1869 on the western end of Plum Island, located in the Long Island Sound, east of Orient Point at the end of the North Fork of Long Island, New York. The lighthouse played a significant role as an aid to navigation for mariners.

Architecture and Construction

The original structure is built from granite and features Romanesque architecture. It stands at a height of approximately 65 feet (20 meters) above sea level, with a focal height of about 105 feet (32 meters). The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1978 and no longer serves as an active aid to navigation.

Light Characteristics

The original light emitted a fixed red beam. After the decommissioning, an automated metal tower was erected approximately 14 feet (4.3 meters) tall, housing the modern light source that has been serving as an aid to navigation since then.

Current Status

The Plum Island Light is no longer in active use and serves as a historic landmark. The original lighthouse structure remains standing, while the newer automated tower houses the current navigational aid.

Location and Accessibility

The Plum Island Light is situated on Point Road, within the Town of Southold, New York. Due to its remote location, access may be limited for visitors.

Heritage Status

The Plum Island Light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, recognizing its historical significance as an aid to navigation and architectural importance.
