Sand Island Lighthouse
The Sand Island Lighthouse is situated on Fort Morgan Road, within the boundaries of the Fort Morgan Historic Site, located on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, United States.
History
- Construction of the lighthouse began in 1859 and was completed in 1861. The tower stands at a height of approximately 105 feet (32 meters) above sea level, with a focal height of about 150 feet (46 meters).
- Initially, it served as an aid to navigation for mariners entering Mobile Bay.
Architecture
The Sand Island Lighthouse is built from local limestone and features a distinctive square tower. The structure's design was influenced by the prominent lighthouses of the time, with a characteristic rounded lantern room at the top.
The light source used during its operational period was a Fresnel lens, which provided an effective beam for navigation.
Light Characteristics
The Sand Island Lighthouse emitted a fixed white light from its lantern room, visible to mariners up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) away.
Its primary function was to guide vessels into Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
Current Status
The lighthouse is currently not in active operation as an aid to navigation. However, it has been automated and now operates under a museum program, managed by the National Park Service.
The tower serves as a reminder of the region's rich maritime history.
Heritage Status
The Sand Island Lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1975, with reference number 75000305.
It is also recognized under the State of Alabama's historic preservation program.
Notable Historical Events
- During the American Civil War, the lighthouse played a significant role as a strategic location for Confederate forces.
- In 1862, Union forces captured Fort Morgan, which included the Sand Island Lighthouse. The tower was later restored and returned to operation in 1890.
