Seguin Light

The Seguin Light is a historic lighthouse located on Seguin Island in the Gulf of Maine, south of the mouth of the Kennebec River, Maine.

History

  • Established in 1795, it is the second-oldest of Maine's coastal lighthouses and the only lighthouse in the state housing a first-order Fresnel lens.
  • The Seguin Light has played an important role in the history of Maine's coastal navigation. During the American Civil War, the lighthouse was used as a signal station for the Union Navy.

Architecture

The present tower was built in 1857 and stands at a height of 54.8 meters (180 feet) above mean sea-level.

The tower is constructed from brick and features a distinctive design that has made it one of Maine's most recognizable landmarks.

The Seguin Light was automated in 1985, but the buildings of the light station are now operated as a museum property by a non-profit organization.

The lighthouse is seasonally open to the public via scheduled ferry from Popham Beach in Phippsburg.
