History
- The lighthouse was put into service during a time of significant maritime activity, as the United States was expanding its naval presence in the Caribbean.
- The light's construction was overseen by Lieutenant George Meade of the Bureau of Topographical Engineers.
Architecture
The Sombrero Key Light is a distinctive and iconic structure, standing 142 feet tall with a skeletal octagonal pyramid shape made from cast iron.
- The tower is painted red and features two platforms: one at 15 feet above the water, which held tanks for water and fuel, as well as a generator; and another at 40 feet above the water, which served as quarters for the lighthouse staff.
