The Staten Island Range Lighthouse was constructed in 1891 and began operation shortly thereafter. Its primary function was to serve as a rear range light for vessels navigating the Swash Channel, which connects New York Harbor to the Atlantic Ocean.
The lighthouse stands at a height of 30.7 meters (101 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of 68.6 meters (225 feet). Its distinctive white tower is made of cast iron and features a rotating Fresnel lens that produces a beam of light visible up to 24 nautical miles.
