West Breakwater Light

The West Breakwater Light is a historic lighthouse located on Lake Erie, near the mouth of the Grand River in Painesville Township, Ohio, United States.

History

  • Built in 1925 to replace an earlier structure, the West Breakwater Light was constructed as part of a breakwater system to aid navigation in the area. The light served as a navigational aid for mariners until it was automated and decommissioned from active service.

Architecture

The tower stands at a height of approximately 60 feet (18 meters) above the waterline, with a focal height of about 85 feet (26 meters). The structure is constructed from concrete and features a distinctive design. The light emits a white beam with a range of 13 nautical miles and operates on an automatic system.

Light Characteristics

  • The West Breakwater Light features an Iso character, indicating it serves as a primary aid to navigation. The light operates automatically, using a keying microphone to transmit signals on VHF-FM Channel 83A.

Current Status

The lighthouse is currently closed to the public but can be viewed from the breakwater trail. It has been automated and is no longer an active navigational aid.

Location and Accessibility

Located at Lighthouse Trail, Painesville Township, Ohio, the West Breakwater Light is accessible via a short walk along the breakwater trail. The structure is situated near the mouth of the Grand River on Lake Erie.

Heritage Status

The Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, recognizing its significance as a historic lighthouse and navigational aid.

Notable Historical Events
