Hải Đăng Cao Trang

The Hải Đăng Cao Trang, also known as the Cao Trang Light, is a historic lighthouse located on the southern coast of Vietnam.

History

  • The Cao Trang Light was constructed in 1898 by the French colonial authorities to serve as a navigational aid for ships approaching the port city of Ho Chi Minh City. The lighthouse played a crucial role in facilitating trade and commerce between France and Southeast Asia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Architecture

The Cao Trang Light is a traditional French-style lighthouse, characterized by its tall, slender tower with a distinctive conical roof. The structure was built using local materials, including limestone and brick, with a reinforced iron framework supporting the tower's height. The lighthouse stands at an impressive 30 meters (98 feet) tall, with a focal height of 45 meters (148 feet), allowing it to illuminate the surrounding waters for a distance of approximately 10 nautical miles.

Light Characteristics

The Cao Trang Light features a distinctive rotating light that emits a red beam, visible from a distance of up to 10 nautical miles. The lighthouse's light pattern is reported to be a fixed red flash every two minutes.

Current Status

The Cao Trang Light is no longer an active navigational aid, having been automated in the 1980s. Today, it serves as a museum and cultural landmark, open to visitors who wish to learn about its history and significance.

Location and Accessibility

The Cao Trang Light is situated on Trần Phú Street in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1, near the city center. The lighthouse is easily accessible by public transportation or on foot, with several nearby attractions and landmarks within walking distance.

Heritage Status

The Cao Trang Light was designated as a National Monument of Vietnam in 1997, recognizing its cultural and historical significance to the country.

Notable Historical Events
