Hải Đăng Nam Du

The Hải Đăng Nam Du, also known as the Nam Du Lighthouse, is a prominent maritime aid located on the island of Nam Du in Vietnam.

History

  • The lighthouse was constructed in 1931 by French engineers to serve as a navigational aid for ships traversing the busy waters of the South China Sea. Its strategic location allowed it to guide vessels safely into the port of An Cư, providing crucial support for maritime trade and commerce.

Architecture

The Hải Đăng Nam Du is a sturdy structure built from reinforced concrete and steel, standing at a height of 30 meters (98 feet) above sea level. The tower's distinctive shape is topped with a lantern room containing a powerful Fresnel lens that projects a beam of light out to sea. The lighthouse's design was influenced by French colonial architecture, reflecting the country's historical ties with Europe.

Light Characteristics

The Nam Du Lighthouse emits a characteristic red-and-white striped pattern, visible up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) from its location. Its powerful beam is designed to guide ships safely into port during periods of low visibility.

Current Status

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated in recent years. While no longer manned by a resident keeper, the structure continues to play a vital role in maritime safety in the region.

Location and Accessibility
