History
Construction of the lighthouse began in 1859 and was completed in 1860. It has been an important aid to navigation for mariners entering the Gulf St Vincent.
Architecture
The tower stands at a height of 30 metres (98 feet) above sea level, while its focal height is approximately 45 metres (148 feet). The lighthouse features a distinctive octagonal shape and is constructed from local limestone. The architectural style is typical of mid-19th-century Australian lighthouses.
Light Characteristics
The light emits a fixed red flash every 10 seconds, visible from up to 20 nautical miles out to sea.
Current Status
The Cape Spencer Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since the 1990s. The tower is still maintained by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
Heritage Status
The lighthouse was listed on the South Australian Heritage Register in 2008.
