Cape Tourville Lighthouse

The Cape Tourville Lighthouse is situated on the Cape Tourville Circuit, within the Freycinet National Park, in Coles Bay, Tasmania, Australia.

The lighthouse is easily accessible via a short walk from the parking area.

History

• Built in 1971 by private contractors Hurburgh and Olbrich, the Cape Tourville Lighthouse was constructed to provide better guidance for bulk carriers carrying wood chips from the Triabunna wood chip mill. This new lighthouse was built at the same time as the Point Home Lighthouse, near Triabunna, to improve navigation in the area.
• The lighthouse features a distinctive white light that flashes every 12 seconds, visible up to 28 nautical miles.

Architecture

The lighthouse is a 126-meter-tall (410 ft) structure, with a focal height of 126 meters. The tower's design and construction were chosen for their durability and ability to withstand harsh maritime conditions.

Heritage Status

The lighthouse was reportedly built to replace the Cape Forestier Lighthouse, which had previously stood on a nearby headland known as Lemon Rock. The Freycinet National Park, where the lighthouse is located, is considered a significant cultural and natural heritage site in Tasmania.
