The Swan Island Light House is situated on Swan Island, located off the coast of Dorset, Tasmania, Australia.

History

The construction of the lighthouse began in 1858 and was completed in 1860.

The tower stands at a height of 30 metres (98 feet) above sea level, while the focal point of the light is located at a height of approximately 50 metres (164 feet).

The light emits a beam that can be seen for up to 15 nautical miles.

The light has a period of 7.5 seconds and is visible in all directions from the tower, with a sector end at 33 degrees and a sector start at 70 degrees.

The Swan Island Light House is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register as an important example of mid-19th century lighthouse architecture.

Notable Historical Events

During World War II, the lighthouse played a significant role in the Allied naval blockade of Japanese shipping lanes in the Pacific.

The light was used to guide enemy vessels away from Australian ports and into the open sea.

Current Status

The Swan Island Light House is currently an automated aid to navigation, with the light being powered by solar panels and wind turbines.

However, it remains a popular tourist destination and is occasionally staffed by volunteers for maintenance and upkeep purposes.

The lighthouse has not been reported to be in active operation as a navigational aid since its automation.
