Swan Island Light House

The Swan Island Light House is situated on Swan Island, located off the coast of Dorset, Tasmania, Australia.

The island can be accessed by boat from the nearby town of Dorset.

History

The construction of the lighthouse began in 1858 and was completed in 1860.

It has been an important aid to navigation for mariners passing through the waters surrounding Swan Island.

Architecture

The lighthouse is a tall, white structure with a distinctive square base and a conical tower.

The tower stands at a height of 30 metres (98 feet) above sea level, while the focal point of the light is located at a height of approximately 50 metres (164 feet).

The light emits a beam that can be seen for up to 15 nautical miles.

The light has a period of 7.5 seconds and is visible in all directions from the tower, with a sector end at 33 degrees and a sector start at 70 degrees.

Notable Historical Events

During World War II, the lighthouse played a significant role in the Allied naval blockade of Japanese shipping lanes in the Pacific.

The Swan Island Light House is currently an automated aid to navigation, with the light being powered by solar panels and wind turbines.
