North Mole Lighthouse

The North Mole Lighthouse is situated at the end of North Mole Drive, Fremantle Harbour, Western Australia.

History

  • The lighthouse began operation in 1906, marking the beginning of permanent service for the entrance to Fremantle Harbour. Initially, a temporary lighting arrangement was used, but it was later replaced by a more powerful light source at a focal plane height of 15 metres (49 ft) above sea level.
  • The occulting red light is visible for 18 kilometres (11 mi) and serves as an indicator for the westernmost point of the harbour and its entrance.

Architecture

The lighthouse tower stands at 15 metres (49 ft) tall, constructed from cast iron and painted in a distinctive red hue. Classical decorations adorn the structure, reflecting the design style of its architect, C. Y. O'Connor.

The lighthouse is one of two identical structures on the north and south moles, with the latter being green in colour.

Light Characteristics

  • The light source emits a red occulting beam, visible for 18 kilometres (11 mi), serving as an indicator for the harbour's entrance.
  • The VQ characterisation indicates that the light has a rotating pattern.

Current Status

The North Mole Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, with its automated system ensuring continuous operation. However, it is not currently open to the public for tours or visits.

Heritage Status

The lighthouse holds an 'indicative place' status on the Register of the National Estate, acknowledging its significance as a well-known landmark and historical structure.

Notable Historical Events

  • Severe storms in June 1927 and July 1935 affected the moles but did not seriously damage the lighthouses.
