Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse

The Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse was constructed between 1874 and 1875 by John McLeod, under the design of colonial architect James Barnet.

It is notable for being one of only two towers in Australia to feature an external stairway.

Architecture

  • The lighthouse stands at a height of 79 metres (259 ft) above sea level, with a focal height of approximately 119 metres (390 ft).
  • The tower's design is characteristic of the mid-19th century lighthouses, featuring a cylindrical structure with a distinctive lantern room.

Light Characteristics

The Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse features a Fl (first order) light, which is the standard for major lighthouses in Australia.

The light's sequence is 0.5+(7), indicating that it flashes every 7.5 seconds with a duration of 0.5 seconds.

Current Status

The Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, operated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

However, the structures are maintained and operated by the Land and Property Management Authority (LPA).

Location

The lighthouse is situated on Sugarloaf Point, approximately 3 kilometres southeast of Seal Rocks in Mid-Coast Council, New South Wales, Australia.

The location can be accessed via an unpaved road, with parking provided at the site.

Heritage Status

  • The property has been listed on several heritage registers:
  • Commonwealth Heritage List (added on June 22, 2004)
  • New South Wales State Heritage Register (added on February 22, 2019)
  • (now defunct) Register of the National Estate (added on April 10, 1989)

Notable Historical Events

The Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse has played a significant role in maritime safety in the region.

Its construction marked an important milestone in Australia's lighthouse development and its continued operation ensures the safety of mariners navigating the treacherous waters surrounding Seal Rocks.

Visiting Information

While the tower is closed to the public, a nearby lookout provides good views of the surrounding area.

Visitors can access the location via the unpaved road leading to the site.
