Tacking Point Lighthouse

The Tacking Point Lighthouse is situated on a rocky headland approximately 8 kilometres south of Port Macquarie, Australia. The lighthouse can be accessed via Lighthouse Road.

History

Built in 1879 by Shepherd and Joseph William Mortley to a design by James Barnet, the New South Wales Colonial Architect, Tacking Point Lighthouse is one of Australia's oldest lighthouses. It was constructed on a rocky headland to serve as a navigational aid for mariners.

Architecture

The lighthouse stands at a height of 34 metres above sea level and has a focal height of approximately 120 metres. The tower is made from stone and features a distinctive design characteristic of the period in which it was built.

Tacking Point Lighthouse emits a white light with a range of 16 nautical miles and a period of 20 seconds. The light is characterized by a Fl (first) sequence, indicating that it serves as a warning to mariners of potential hazards ahead.
