Cabo de Santo Agostinho was incorporated as a town in 1811. While Vicente Yáñez Pinzón is believed by some historians to have set anchor in a bay within the municipality on January 26, 1500, this event is not officially recognized as part of Brazilian history.

Pedro Álvares Cabral's discovery of Brazil on April 21, 1500, is widely acknowledged.
