History

  • The Farol da Barra was constructed in 1882 and has been guiding mariners through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean ever since. Its strategic location allows it to serve as a vital aid to navigation for ships traversing the busy shipping lanes between South America and Europe.

Architecture

The lighthouse is a white quadrangular framework tower, standing at an impressive 33 meters in height. The tower's design is characteristic of the late 19th-century maritime architecture style, with a sturdy foundation and a distinctive lantern room at its summit.

Light Characteristics

  • The Farol da Barra emits a powerful beam that can be seen for up to 16 nautical miles out to sea. The light is white in color and flashes every 10 seconds, using a character known as "Fl" to indicate the direction of the beam.
