Farol Naufragados

The Farol Naufragados is a historic lighthouse located on the island of Santa Catarina, off the coast of Florianópolis, Brazil.

History

  • The construction of the Farol Naufragados began in 1861. The tower was built to serve as a navigational aid for mariners and fishermen, providing a reliable source of light to guide vessels through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Architecture

The lighthouse is a white truncated conical stone tower with a height of 43 meters (141 feet) above sea level. The focal height, which is the distance from the top of the tower to the base of the lens, is 53 meters (173 feet). The tower's design is characteristic of traditional lighthouses, with a sturdy foundation and a distinctive shape that can be seen from a distance.

Light Characteristics

The Farol Naufragados emits a white light with a range of 18 nautical miles. The light has a period of 15 seconds and is visible in all directions within a sector of 177° to 285°. The light's characteristics are designated as Fl (flash) by the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities.

Current Status

The Farol Naufragados is currently an active aid to navigation, operated by the Marinha do Brasil. However, it has been automated since its construction, with a modern electronic system replacing the traditional optic lantern.

Location and Accessibility

The lighthouse is situated on Trilha do Farol, a scenic trail that winds its way through the island's lush vegetation. The location is easily accessible by car or public transportation, with several parking areas available near the tower.

Heritage Status

The Farol Naufragados has been designated as a historic landmark and cultural heritage site by the Brazilian government. Its significance as a navigational aid and its well-preserved architecture make it an important part of Brazil's maritime history.

Notable Historical Events

  • During World War II, the Farol Naufragados played a crucial role in guiding Allied ships through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic. The lighthouse's light was also used as a beacon for rescue operations, saving countless lives during the war.
