• The construction of the lighthouse began in 1880 and was completed in 1882. The tower was built to serve as a navigational aid for ships traversing the busy Strait of Malacca. Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone several renovations and restorations to maintain its structural integrity.

Architecture

The Mercusuar Pulau Terkulai is a traditional Dutch-style lighthouse, characterized by its square tower with a distinctive lantern room at the top. The tower stands approximately 25 meters tall, while the focal height reaches an impressive 30 meters above sea level. The structure is constructed from local materials, including stone and wood.

Light Characteristics

The lighthouse features a characteristic red-and-white striped pattern on its lantern room, visible from a distance of several kilometers. The light source is reportedly a first-order Fresnel lens, which projects a beam that can be seen up to 20 nautical miles away.

Current Status

The Mercusuar Pulau Terkulai remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated in recent years. Visitors can still climb the tower for panoramic views of the surrounding waters and islands.

Location and Accessibility

Terkulai Island is accessible by boat or ferry from Tanjung Pinang, the capital city of Riau Islands. The lighthouse itself is located on a small island, requiring a short walk from the mainland to reach the tower.

• During World War II, the lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding Allied ships through the Strait of Malacca. The tower's strategic location made it an important target for Japanese forces, who attempted to destroy the structure during the war. Fortunately, the lighthouse survived intact and remains standing today as a testament to its enduring importance.
