Location and Accessibility
The Blacksod Lighthouse is situated at the southern end of the Mullet Peninsula, Erris, County Mayo, Ireland.
It can be accessed via R313.
History
The lighthouse was built in 1864.
Architecture
The lighthouse is made of local granite blocks, sourced from the nearby Beaufort quarries.
The tower and keeper's house are constructed in a unique square design, one of only two true square lighthouses in Ireland.
The lantern section on top is conical in shape and painted white.
Light Characteristics
The lighthouse emits a red light with a period of 7.5 seconds, visible from a range of 9 nautical miles.
A white light is also emitted, visible from a range of 12 nautical miles.
Current Status
The Blacksod Lighthouse is no longer an active aid to navigation, having been automated.
