History

Its architecture was designed by Japanese engineer Tetsuya Ishii, who also designed several other notable lighthouses in Japan.

Light Characteristics

The 日和山燈台 emits a fixed white light with a range of 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers).

The light is visible from a distance of approximately 10 nautical miles (19 kilometers) at night.

Current Status

The 日和山燈台 was decommissioned in the 1990s and now serves as a museum, open to visitors.

While it is no longer an active aid to navigation, its historic significance and picturesque location make it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Location and Accessibility

The lighthouse is located on Jōan San, approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) off the coast of Otaru, Hokkaido.

The island can be accessed by boat or ferry from Otaru's harbor.

Visitors can also reach the lighthouse via a short hike from the nearby town of Otaru.

Heritage Status

The 日和山燈台 is listed as a National Historic Landmark in Japan and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its cultural and historical significance.
