Cape Egmont Lighthouse
The Cape Egmont Lighthouse is situated on Cape Egmont, located at the southernmost tip of the North Island, New Zealand. The address is Cape Road, near the town of Paraparaumu.
History
- The lighthouse was originally erected in 1865 on Mana Island to the north west of Porirua, but it was later dismantled and moved to its current location at Cape Egmont in 1877. It has been a vital aid to navigation for mariners ever since.
- The light was manufactured by Simpson & Co., Pimlico, London, in 1864.
Architecture
The lighthouse stands at a height of 33 metres (108 feet) above the sea level and has a focal height of 33 metres. It features three distinctive white lights with a period of eight seconds each. The light's architecture is characteristic of early 19th-century British lighthouses, with a cylindrical tower and a gallery for the keeper.
Current Status
The Cape Egmont Lighthouse was demanned and fully automated in 1986. Today, it remains an active aid to navigation, although its operation has been taken over by Maritime New Zealand.
Heritage Status
The lighthouse is listed on the New Zealand Heritage List No. 820, recognizing its historical significance as a navigational aid and its contribution to the country's maritime heritage.
