History

Architecture

The lighthouse stands at a height of 14 meters (46 feet) above sea level, while its focal point reaches an altitude of 271 meters (890 feet). The tower is constructed from reinforced concrete and features a distinctive white color scheme. The light source is a rotating beam with a range of 15 nautical miles.

Light Characteristics

The Farol de São Jorge emits a LFl (Lateral Flashing) pattern, which consists of two flashes separated by three seconds. The light has a period of five minutes and is visible in all directions from the tower.

Current Status

The lighthouse remains an active navigational aid, although it has been automated since its installation in 1905. In recent years, the structure has undergone significant restoration work to ensure its continued operation.

The Farol de São Jorge is situated on Estrada do Farol, near the town of Santana on the island of Madeira. The lighthouse can be accessed via a short walkway from the nearby parking area.
