Cape Columbine Lighthouse

The Cape Columbine Lighthouse is situated on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Columbine, approximately 3 km from Paternoster on the West Coast of South Africa. It can be accessed via Sonkwas Street.

History

The lighthouse was built in 1936 by H.C. Cooper and his wife, who officially opened it at sunset on October 1, 1936. The tower stands at a height of 15 metres (49 ft) above ground level.

Architecture

The 15-metre-high (49 ft) wooden tower is designed to be visible from a distance. It was constructed on higher ground called Castle Rock, which elevates the light 80 metres (260 ft) above sea level.

Light Characteristics

The lighthouse emits a white light with a range of 30 nautical miles and flashes every 15 seconds in a Fl sequence. The light is visible from a distance due to its height and location on a rocky outcrop.

Current Status

The Cape Columbine Lighthouse is no longer an active aid to navigation, as it has been automated. However, the tower remains a notable landmark and is occasionally used for educational purposes or as part of historical events.

Heritage Status

The lighthouse is not listed as a National Monument in South Africa, but its location on Castle Rock makes it a significant feature of the surrounding area.

Notable Historical Events

Cape Columbine was named after the ship Columbine that sank there in 1829.
