Green Point Lighthouse

The Green Point Lighthouse is located on Mouille Point in Cape Town, South Africa. It can be accessed via Beach Road.

History

• The Green Point Lighthouse was commissioned by acting Governor of the Cape Colony Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin and designed by German architect Herman Shutte. Building commenced in 1821 and was completed in 1823. The lighthouse started operating in 1824, making it the first solid lighthouse structure on the South African coast and the oldest operational lighthouse in South Africa.
• The lighthouse features a cylindrical tower with a distinctive lantern room at its top. The lighthouse was constructed using local materials, including stone and brick. Herman Shutte's design was influenced by traditional German lighthouse designs.

Light Characteristics

The light from the Green Point Lighthouse can be seen for up to 25 nautical miles (46 km) in all directions. Its characteristic is a white light flashing every 10 seconds. The lighthouse also features a foghorn, which was installed in 1926 despite local residents' complaints.

Current Status

The Green Point Lighthouse remains an operational aid to navigation, although it has been automated over the years. It continues to serve as a vital navigational aid for mariners and fishermen in the Cape Town area.

Heritage Status

The Green Point Lighthouse is listed on the National Heritage List of South Africa, recognizing its historical significance as a pioneering lighthouse structure in the country.

Notable Historical Events

• In 1923, local residents sent a letter to the Mayor of Cape Town expressing their disapproval of the installation of a foghorn in the lighthouse. The controversy surrounding the foghorn's installation has become a notable aspect of the lighthouse's history.
