The Inner Harbor Red Light is a historic lighthouse located on the coast of Taiwan.

History

  • The Inner Harbor Red Light was constructed in 1914, during the Japanese colonial period. It played a crucial role in guiding mariners through the Inner Harbor of Keelung, one of the busiest ports in northern Taiwan.

Architecture and Construction Materials

  • The lighthouse stands at a height of 25 meters (82 feet), with a focal height of 30 meters (98 feet). The tower is constructed from stone and brick, with a distinctive red coloration. The lantern room features a cylindrical shape, housing a first-order Fresnel lens.

Light Characteristics

  • The Inner Harbor Red Light emits a fixed red light pattern, visible up to 10 nautical miles (18 kilometers) out to sea. The light was originally powered by a steam engine, but has since been automated.

Current Status

The Inner Harbor Red Light is no longer an active aid to navigation and has been converted into a museum. It serves as a popular tourist attraction and historical landmark in Keelung.

Notable Historical Events

  • During World War II, the Inner Harbor Red Light played a role in guiding Allied forces into Keelung harbor. The lighthouse's red light was also used to signal the arrival of troops during the war.
