Strathy Point Lighthouse

The Strathy Point Lighthouse was initially planned in 1953 and completed by 1958. It was the first lighthouse in Scotland specifically built to be electrically operated.

The lighthouse's construction marked a significant milestone in the development of maritime safety in Scotland.

Architecture

• The Strathy Point Lighthouse is a notable example of modern lighthouse design. Its tower height is approximately 45 meters, while its focal height is 250mm above sea level.
• The lighthouse features a distinctive two-panel lighting device with a 250watt light bulb, which provided a range of almost 26 miles.
• The original fog horn has been removed and is no longer in use.

Light Characteristics

The Strathy Point Lighthouse emits a white light with a sequence of Fl (first order) at a period of 20 seconds. This pattern is designed to provide maximum visibility for mariners navigating the surrounding waters.

Current Status

The lighthouse was fully automated in 1997 and was subsequently telemetered from the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters in Edinburgh until its decommissioning in 2012.

Following its decommissioning, the station was converted for residential use.
