Assateague Light

The Assateague Light was constructed in 1867 to replace an earlier lighthouse built in 1833.

The Assateague Light is a conical-shaped lighthouse, standing at a height of 142 feet (43 meters) above sea level.

• The structure is painted in alternating bands of red and white.

The Assateague Light emits a characteristic pattern of two short flashes, followed by three long flashes, every 20 seconds.

Current Status

The Assateague Light remains an active aid to navigation, operated jointly by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Chincoteague Natural History Association.

• The keeper's quarters are used as seasonal housing for refuge temporary employees, volunteers, and interns.

Location and Accessibility

The lighthouse is located on the southern end of Assateague Island off the coast of the Virginia Eastern Shore, United States.

• It can be accessed by road from Chincoteague Island over the Assateague Channel.

• In 2013, a $1.5 million renovation was completed to restore the lighthouse's exterior and replace damaged components.
