Brandywine Shoal Light

The Brandywine Shoal Light was constructed in 1828 and is considered to be the first screw-pile lighthouse in the United States.

History

The tower stands at a height of 18 meters (59 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of approximately 30 meters (98 feet). The structure is made from cast iron and features a distinctive conical shape. The light was originally equipped with a Fresnel lens.

Light Characteristics

The Brandywine Shoal Light emits a fixed white light, visible to mariners at a range of up to 20 nautical miles. The light's pattern is characterized by a steady pulse.

Current Status

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its construction. It is not currently open to the public as a museum.
