The Cape Henry Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located on Cape Henry, marking the southern entrance to Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, United States.
History
- Construction of the original lighthouse began in 1792 and was completed at an original contract amount of $15,200. The lighthouse was also the first federal construction project under the Constitution. A second lighthouse was built a short distance away after concern arose about the stability of the first. Construction on this new tower began in 1879 and was completed in 1881.
Architecture
The Cape Henry Lighthouse is an octagonal pyramidal tower, with upper and lower half of each face alternately black and white. The lighthouse features a distinctive design, with four distinct sections: the main tower, the lantern room, the gallery, and the foundation. The tower stands at 49.9 meters (163 feet) tall, while its focal height is 61.4 meters (201.8 feet).
Light Characteristics
The Cape Henry Lighthouse features a unique light pattern, with three distinct sections: U1, U2, and U3. Each section has a different range and color, with the main beam being white at 17 nautical miles, red at 15 nautical miles, and white again at 17 nautical miles. The lighthouse is equipped with a Fresnel lens, which helps to concentrate the light.
Current Status
The Cape Henry Lighthouse was designated as an automated aid to navigation in 1980. However, it has been decommissioned and is no longer an active aid to navigation. Today, the lighthouse serves as a museum and historic landmark, open to visitors for tours.
