The DeTour Reef Light is a non-profit-operated lighthouse marking the southern entrance of the DeTour Passage between the eastern end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Drummond Island.

History

Architecture

The DeTour Reef Lighthouse is a 40-foot-tall (12 m) tower with a first-order Fresnel lens. It was designed by architect John M. Hays, who also designed several other lighthouses along the Great Lakes. The light's structure is made of cast iron and features a distinctive octagonal shape.

Light Characteristics

The DeTour Reef Light emits a red flash every 10 seconds, visible from a distance of approximately 20 nautical miles (37 km). The light is an automated active aid to navigation, powered by solar panels and a backup generator.

The DeTour Reef Lighthouse is currently an active aid to navigation, marking the northern end of Lake Huron. It has been automated since its installation in 1997.

Location and Accessibility

The DeTour Reef Light is located on Light House Road, three miles south of the nearest town, DeTour Village, Michigan. The lighthouse can be accessed via a private road, but visitors must obtain permission from the property owner to visit.

Heritage Status

The DeTour Reef Lighthouse has been designated as a historic landmark by the State of Michigan and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
