History

The lighthouse stands at a height of 40 feet (12 meters) above the surrounding terrain, but its focal height reaches 65 feet (20 meters). The tower is constructed from cast iron and features a distinctive octagonal shape. The light source is a first-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced with an automated optic in 1981.

The Six Mile Point Range Light emits a fixed red light, visible to mariners up to 21 nautical miles away. The light's pattern is a steady burn, and it operates continuously from dawn till dusk during the summer months, and until midnight during the winter months.

Current Status

The lighthouse is currently operated by automation, with the aid of solar-powered equipment. It has been designated as a museum, open to the public for tours and educational programs.

The Six Mile Point Range Light is situated on Huron Street in Detour Township, approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Saginaw, Michigan. The lighthouse is accessible via a paved road, with parking available nearby. Visitors can access the tower by climbing the 75 steps to the top.

The Six Mile Point Range Light has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980, recognizing its significance as an important navigational aid in the Saginaw Bay region.

Notable Historical Events

  • In 1867, the lighthouse was upgraded with a new Fresnel lens, which significantly improved its range and visibility. During World War II, the tower played a role in the war effort, serving as a communication relay station for nearby military installations.
