Fort Gratiot Light
The Fort Gratiot Light was constructed north of Fort Gratiot in 1825 by Lucius Lyon, who later became one of Michigan's first U.S. Senators. This lighthouse marks the entrance to the St. Clair River from Lake Huron (going south) in the southern portion of Michigan's Thumb.
Architecture
- The Fort Gratiod Light is a white conical brick tower with a distinctive appearance. The light itself is a green characterizing Fl, marking the entrance to the St. Clair River from Lake Huron. The tower stands at 26.2 meters (86 feet) in height and has a focal height of approximately 30 meters (98 feet).
Light Characteristics
The Fort Gratiot Light emits a green light with a range of 16 nautical miles, visible to mariners entering the St. Clair River from Lake Huron.
Current Status
The Fort Gratiot Light is still an active aid to navigation, although its operation has been transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard. The federal government transferred ownership of the light to St. Clair County Parks and Recreation (St. Clair County PARC) in 2010. In 2012, St. Clair County PARC partnered with the Port Huron Museums to provide tours and lighthouse tower climbs to the public.
Location
The Fort Gratiot Light is located at Coast Guard Access in Port Huron, Michigan, across the river from Point Edward Front Range Light. The light's property also features a public beach and park known as Lighthouse Beach.
Heritage Status
The Fort Gratiot Light was designated as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) on July 30, 1976. It is considered one of Michigan's most notable landmarks and the oldest surviving lighthouse in the state.
Notable Historical Events
The Fort Gratiot Light has played an important role in maritime history, particularly during its early years as a vital aid to navigation for ships entering Lake Huron from the St. Clair River.
