Little Sable Point Lighthouse

The Little Sable Point Light was constructed in 1874 and has been an important aid to navigation on Lake Michigan ever since its completion.

History

• DDesigned by Col. Orlando M. Poe, a renowned architect of the time, this lighthouse is considered a classic example of his work.

The tower's foundation consists of 109 1-foot-diameter wood pilings driven into the sand, capped by 12 feet of stone.

Architecture

• The walls of the tower are made of brick and rise to a height of approximately 32 feet (9.8 meters).
• The structure is topped with a distinctive lantern room that houses the Fresnel lens.

The Little Sable Point Light emits a white light visible from a distance of up to 20 nautical miles.

Light Characteristics

• The light's pattern is fixed, and it operates on a 24-hour schedule.

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although its operation has been automated over the years.

Current Status

• Visitors can still climb the tower for panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding area.

Location and Accessibility

Located in Golden Township, just south of Silver Lake State Park, the Little Sable Point Light is accessible via North Lighthouse Drive 287.

The lighthouse is open to visitors from May 27th to September 25th, with limited hours during this period.

Heritage Status

• The Little Sable Point Light has been designated as a National Historic Landmark (NRHP) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
