The South Pierhead Inner Light is a historic lighthouse located on the south pier of Grand Haven, Michigan, where the Grand River enters Lake Michigan.

History

  • A lighthouse was first lit at this location in 1839. The current structure, a red cylindrical tower, was built in 1881 and has been an important aid to navigation ever since. In 2009, under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the lighthouse was put up for sale.

Architecture

The South Pierhead Inner Light is a distinctive red cylindrical tower with a height of 16 meters (52 feet). The tower is constructed from cast iron and features a prominent lantern room at its top. The light source is a red oil lamp, which emits a beam that can be seen for up to 6 nautical miles.

The South Pierhead Inner Light is located on the south pier of Grand Haven, Michigan, where the Grand River enters Lake Michigan. The address is Main Street, and the lighthouse is easily accessible by car or on foot.

Visiting Information

While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public for tours, visitors can view it from the outside and enjoy the surrounding area. The City of Grand Haven owns the pier, but it is maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The South Pierhead Inner Light has been designated as a historic landmark under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
