Pigeon Point Light
The Pigeon Point Light is a historic lighthouse located on the Pacific coast of California, USA. It was built in 1871 to guide ships through the treacherous waters off the coast.
History
- The Pigeon Point Light Station has been an important aid to navigation for over 140 years. Initially constructed as a wooden tower, it was replaced with a new masonry structure in 1906 due to concerns about its stability. The current white tower stands at 115 feet (35 meters) tall and is one of the tallest lighthouses on the West Coast.
Architecture
The Pigeon Point Light Station's distinctive white masonry tower is reminiscent of traditional New England lighthouse designs. The structure features a characteristic octagonal shape, with a lantern room at its top. The light source is an automated optic, which was installed in 1997 to replace the original Fresnel lens.
Light Characteristics
The Pigeon Point Light emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible from a range of 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers). This distinctive pattern helps guide mariners through the area.
Current Status
The Pigeon Point Light Station is still an active Coast Guard aid to navigation. However, it has undergone significant renovations in recent years, including major repairs and upgrades. In 2021, the California state legislature allocated funding for these efforts, which are ongoing.
Location and Accessibility
The lighthouse is situated on State Route 1, approximately 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of Pescadero, California, between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. The site is easily accessible by car or public transportation.
Heritage Status
The Pigeon Point Light Station has been recognized as a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2022, research published by the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability highlighted concerns about erosion caused by sea level rise, emphasizing the importance of preserving this historic site.
Notable Historical Events
The Pigeon Point Light Station has played a significant role in maritime history, guiding ships through treacherous waters and helping to establish the safety of navigation on the Pacific coast.
