Point Iroquois Lighthouse

The Point Iroquois Lighthouse was constructed in 1856 and has been guiding mariners through the western end of the St. Marys River, connecting Lake Superior to other Great Lakes, ever since its completion.

History

• The lighthouse stands at a height of approximately 100 feet (30 meters) above the surrounding terrain, with a focal height of around 175 feet (53 meters). The tower is constructed from local materials, including limestone and brick. Its design is characteristic of mid-19th-century American lighthouses.
• The Point Iroquois Lighthouse features a first-order Fresnel lens, which projects a red light visible up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) out to sea. The light's pattern is a steady red flash every two seconds.

Current Status

The Point Iroquois Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since the mid-20th century. Today, the lighthouse serves as a museum and popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from across the United States.
