The Sapelo Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1820 and is believed to be the nation's second-oldest brick lighthouse, as well as the oldest survivor among lighthouses designed by Winslow Lewis.

Architecture

The lighthouse stands at a height of 65 feet (20 m) with its focal height reaching approximately 120 feet. The structure is made of brick and has a diameter of about 30 feet (9.1 m) at the base, tapering to 12 feet (3.7 m) at the top.

Their brick walls are several feet thick at the bottom, reducing in thickness towards the top.

Light Characteristics

The Sapelo Island Lighthouse features a characteristic pattern of red and white stripes, which can be seen from a distance. The light has a range of approximately 20 nautical miles (37 km).

Current Status

The lighthouse is currently an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated in recent years.

Location and Accessibility

The Sapelo Island Lighthouse is located on Shell Hammock Road, near the southern tip of Sapelo Island. The location can be accessed by car or public transportation.

Heritage Status

The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 as part of a larger preservation effort that included the surrounding fortification and range light.
