South Bass Island Light

The South Bass Island Light is a historic lighthouse located on Langram Road, South Bass Island, Ohio, United States.

History

• The South Bass Island Light was constructed in 1858 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners approaching the island. The light's construction was part of a larger effort by the U.S. Coast Guard to improve maritime safety in the Great Lakes.

Architecture and Construction

The lighthouse stands at an elevation of 15.24 meters (50 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of approximately 61 meters (200 feet). The tower is constructed from stone and features a distinctive octagonal shape. The light's original Fresnel lens was replaced in the 1930s with a more modern electric lamp.

Light Characteristics

The South Bass Island Light emits a fixed white light that can be seen for up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) out to sea. The light is visible from a distance of approximately 10 nautical miles (18.5 kilometers).

Current Status

The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since the 1980s.

Location and Accessibility

The South Bass Island Light is located on Langram Road, South Bass Island, Ohio, United States. The island can be accessed by ferry from nearby Port Clinton and Sandusky, both on the mainland. Visitors can also reach the lighthouse via a short walk from Put-in-Bay Township.

Heritage Status

The South Bass Island Light is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as part of the Lake Erie Islands Lighthouses group.
