History

  • The construction of the Hải Đăng Cửa Đại began in 1891 and was completed in 1893. The lighthouse played a crucial role in maritime navigation, serving as a beacon for ships entering the Cua Dai harbor. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations and restorations to maintain its structural integrity.

Architecture

The Hải Đăng Cửa Đại stands at a tower height of approximately 25 meters (82 feet) above sea level. The focal height is around 40 meters (131 feet), allowing for a significant range of visibility. The lighthouse's architecture is characterized by a cylindrical structure with a distinctive lantern room, typical of traditional Vietnamese lighthouses.

Light Characteristics

The Hải Đăng Cửa Đại features a fixed red light, which serves as a warning to mariners about the presence of shallow waters and obstacles in the harbor. The light's range is reportedly visible up to 10 nautical miles (18 kilometers) out to sea.

Current Status

The Hải Đăng Cửa Đại is currently an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its restoration in recent years. However, due to its historical significance and cultural importance, the lighthouse has also been converted into a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Vietnam's rich maritime heritage.

The Hải Đăng Cửa Đại is situated on the coast of Âu Cơ, approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) east of Hội An. The lighthouse can be accessed via a short walk from the nearby beach or by taking a taxi from Hội An town center.
