Bull Rock Lighthouse

The Bull Rock Lighthouse was approved and built on Bull Rock in 1889, following a temporary light station established on Dursey Island after a storm destroyed an earlier iron structure in 1881. This new lighthouse replaced the original structure that had been erected in 1866 to serve as an aid to navigation for Calf Rock.

Architecture

The Bull Rock Lighthouse is constructed from stone and stands at a height of 83 meters (272 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of approximately 121 meters (397 feet). The lighthouse features a distinctive design with a unique hole traversing the entire length of the rock, according to Irish mythology. This natural feature has been referred to as the "Entrance of the Underworld".

Light Characteristics

The Bull Rock Lighthouse emits a white light that can be seen from 21 nautical miles away and is characterized by a flashing pattern every 15 seconds.

The Bull Rock Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights. The lighthouse has undergone various upgrades and maintenance over the years to ensure its continued safety and effectiveness.
