History

  • The Malegaon Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1889 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners. It played a crucial role in guiding ships through the treacherous waters of the Seto Inland Sea.

The lighthouse stands at a height of 76 meters (249 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of 103 meters (338 feet). The tower is made of stone and features a distinctive octagonal shape. The light source is a first-order Fresnel lens, which was considered state-of-the-art technology at the time of its construction.

Light Characteristics

The lighthouse emits a white light that can be seen from a distance of 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers). The light has a period of six seconds and is characterized by a flashing pattern (Fl).

Current Status

The Malegaon Island Lighthouse is currently an active aid to navigation, although it has been automated since its installation. The lighthouse is still maintained by the Japanese Coast Guard.
