上島灯台
The 上島灯台 is a historic lighthouse located on the island of Shōsa, off the coast of Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
History
- The construction of the above-ground lantern tower began in 1888 and was completed in 1891. The lighthouse played an important role in maritime navigation during the Meiji period (1868-1912), serving as a beacon for ships approaching the port city of Himeji.
Architecture
The above-ground lantern tower stands at a height of approximately 20 meters (66 feet) and has a focal height of about 30 meters (98 feet). The structure is constructed from stone and brick, with a distinctive square shape. The lighthouse features a traditional Japanese-style lantern room, housing a first-order Fresnel lens.
Light Characteristics
The light emitted by the above-ground lantern tower operates on an alternating current system, producing a characteristic red flash every 10 seconds, visible up to 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) at sea.
Current Status
The 上島灯台 is currently no longer in active use as a navigational aid. However, it has been automated and now serves as a museum, operated by the Himeji City Museum of Art.
Location and Accessibility
The above-ground lantern tower is situated on the island of Shōsa, approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) off the coast of Himeji. The lighthouse can be accessed via a short boat ride from Himeji's port area.
Heritage Status
The 上島灯台 has been designated as a National Historic Landmark in Japan and is also listed on the Japanese Register of Cultural Properties.
Notable Historical Events
- During World War II, the above-ground lantern tower was used as a military observation post by the Imperial Japanese Army.
