The Deer Island Thorofare Light Station was constructed in 1858 to serve as a navigational aid for mariners traversing the Thorofare Strait between Mount Desert Island and Vinalhaven Island. The light station has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years, with the most recent being a major restoration project completed in 2013.

The Deer Island Thorofare Light Station is a 30-foot-tall (9 m) brick tower with a distinctive octagonal shape. The lighthouse features a first-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced by an automated optic in 1982. The structure is constructed from local granite and has undergone several restorations to maintain its original integrity.
