Eagle Island Light

The Eagle Island Light was first constructed in 1838 on Eagle Island in Penobscot Bay, Maine. However, due to significant physical defects, it had to be demolished and rebuilt in 1858. The tower has undergone several changes over the years, with multiple families operating the light station.

History

• The light was automated in 1959, marking a significant shift in its operation.
• In 1964, local protests led to the destruction of the keeper's house, and the bell was removed from service. Unfortunately, the crew responsible for removing the bell lost control of it, and it fell into Penobscot Bay.

A lobsterman later salvaged the bell, which is now on display at Great Spruce Head Island.
