Hereford Inlet Light

The Hereford Inlet Light is a historic lighthouse located on the southern shore of Hereford Inlet at the north end of Five Mile Beach in North Wildwood, New Jersey.

History

The construction of the Hereford Inlet Light was completed in 1874. It became operational shortly after its completion and has been guiding mariners safely through the waters ever since.

Architecture

The lighthouse stands at a height of 17.4 meters (57 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles). The tower is constructed from masonry materials, with a distinctive architectural style that reflects its age and purpose.

Light Characteristics

The Hereford Inlet Light features a characteristic Fl (First Order) light, which can be seen up to 18 nautical miles (33 km; 20.5 mi) away. The light's period is 10 seconds, and it emits a white beam of light.

Current Status

The Hereford Inlet Light remains an active aid to navigation, operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. However, its automation status is not publicly available.

Location and Accessibility

The lighthouse is located at North Central Avenue 111 in North Wildwood, New Jersey. It can be visited by the public, although access may be restricted due to its location on private property.

Heritage Status

The Hereford Inlet Light has been designated as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) and listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is also protected under the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Parks and Forestry.
