Batticaloa Lighthouse

The Batticaloa Lighthouse was constructed in 1913 and has been an important aid to navigation on the east coast of Sri Lanka ever since its completion. The lighthouse played a crucial role in maritime trade, guiding ships safely into the port of Batticaloa.

The Batticaloa Lighthouse stands at a height of 28 metres (92 feet) above sea level, with a focal height of approximately 40 metres (131 feet). The tower is constructed from plaster and has a concrete foundation. The lighthouse's design was chosen to withstand the harsh coastal environment and provide reliable guidance for mariners.

Light Characteristics

The Batticaloa Lighthouse emits a distinctive pattern of red flashes every two seconds, visible from a range of approximately 20 nautical miles (37 kilometres). This ensures that ships approaching the coast can safely navigate through the area.
