The Oluvil Lighthouse was built in 1999 as part of the development of Oluvil Harbour.

History

  • The Oluvil Lighthouse was declared open on June 19, 1999, by then Sri Lanka's Minister for Port Development, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, M. H. M. Ashraff, and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader M. H. M. Ashraff.

Architecture

The lighthouse tower stands at a height of 24 metres (79 ft) and is constructed from white concrete. The cylindrical structure features a lantern room with a gallery attached to a one-story small equipment building.

Light Characteristics

The Oluvil Lighthouse emits a fixed white light, providing a reliable aid to navigation for vessels in the surrounding waters.

Current Status

The lighthouse remains an active navigational aid, operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. Its automated system ensures continuous monitoring and maintenance of the light's performance.

Location and Accessibility

The Oluvil Lighthouse is situated on the southern east coast of Sri Lanka at Oluvil, approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) south of Kalmunai. The lighthouse can be accessed via a designated path leading to its base.

Heritage Status

The Oluvil Lighthouse has been recognized for its historical significance as part of Sri Lanka's maritime heritage.
