History

Originally lit on February 1, 1855, the Point Pinos Lighthouse has been an operational aid to navigation for over 165 years, making it the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States.

Architecture

The Point Pinos Lighthouse is a third-order Fresnel lens lighthouse, designed by architect John H. Tyner.

The tower stands at a height of 27.1 meters (89 feet) above sea level, with the focal plane located at a height of 20.3 meters (67 feet).

The light emits a white beam with a range of 17 nautical miles.

Current Status

The Point Pinos Lighthouse is currently an active United States Coast Guard aid to navigation, although it has been automated since 1975.

Heritage Status

The Point Pinos Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) with a registration number of 77000312.

It has also been designated as a historic landmark by the State of California and the City of Pacific Grove.
